We just wrapped up a dual-fuel system install in Lula, GA - and this one is a great example of how the right setup can make a real difference in both comfort and efficiency year-round.
Here's how it works. We installed a Goodman 4-Ton GZV7S Premium Communicating Heat Pump paired with a 96% AFUE gas furnace. When temperatures are mild, the heat pump does all the heavy lifting - heating and cooling your home efficiently without burning any gas at all. When it gets cold enough that the heat pump loses its edge, the high-efficiency furnace kicks in automatically and takes over. The system manages itself. You just stay comfortable.
That 96% AFUE rating on the furnace is worth paying attention to. It means 96 cents of every dollar spent on gas is actually converted to heat. That's about as efficient as a gas furnace gets. Pair that with a communicating heat pump that constantly adjusts its output to match what the home needs, and you've got a system built to keep energy bills as low as possible no matter the season.
Dual-fuel setups aren't the right call for every home, but for homes in Georgia where winters can swing between mild and genuinely cold, they make a lot of sense. You get the efficiency of a heat pump when it's practical, and the raw heating power of gas when you actually need it. It's a smarter split than going all-electric or all-gas.
Getting the install done cleanly - from the indoor air handler and furnace connections down to the outdoor unit placement - matters just as much as the equipment choice. A system that's sized wrong or connected sloppily won't perform the way it should, no matter how good the equipment is. We take both seriously on every job.
